I am curious - it looks like you routinely spend about $200 a week (after sales & coupons) at Kroger. You don't normally show your grocery purchases, so with a family of two adults and a toddler what are your big expenses - alcohol, organic products, gourmet items?
Hi Ann!
After sales & coupons I routinely spend b/w $60 & $120 a week at Kroger, after discounts & coupons. Thats a big difference, I know! I have two 'big' grocery runs a month & then the two 'off' weeks tend to be less.
My more costly expenses, thinking of my trip yesterday, are Cat food (both dry & wet); organic produce, yogurt & milk; stocking up on meat when its on sale (I grabbed 4 of the Split Chicken Breasts yesterday that are on sale for $.98 cents/lb this week at Kroger) and then the deli meats. I get them cut at the counter b/c my family LOVES the BoarsHead brand and they don't have any nitrates in them - so it's worth it to me to pay a little bit more :-)
Just saw that you are expecting again! Congratulations :-)
I meant to say $200 before sales & coupons - oops. :)
Yes - I agree Boar's Head lunchmeat is the best. My girls don't really like lunch meats, and hubby usually has lunch meetings so he usually eats out for lunch. So that isn't a regular expense for us. The organic produce and perishables add up quickly. I try to buy off of the dirty dozen list when it comes to organic produce. We don't have any pets(due to allergies)so that is a regular expense that we don't have. But with soon to be 3 kids ages 4&1/2 and under I don't need anything else that pees, poops, or needs me to feed and clean-up after it. :)
I also agree that sometimes you have to spend more to save in the long run. That is the whole art of stockpiling - buy it at a low price now so that you don't have to pay full price later.
Thanks for letting me know.
My bug isn't a huge fan of the lunch meat on it's own - however, I slip it into Grilled Cheeses & Quesadillas for extra protein! ;-)
I do buy a lot of Private Selection Organic at Kroger - which is a savings re: Organic but still more expensive than non-organic.
I don't blame you & completely agree regarding caring for pets when you have children! haha! It's hard to meet everyone's needs & then yours too! Luckily, our two cats are older & pretty lazy. Besides food & their litter box - they only require love. Now - it'll be a LONG time before we ever get a dog!
We eat most of our meals from home. My husband eats out for lunch on Friday's and packs the rest of the week and we'll eat dinner out usually on Saturday nights.
I always try to do my best at Kroger. I have pretty much mastered CVS but am still learning with Kroger. Some weeks are amazing - towards 50-60% and then some are modest around 20%. I am thrilled when I hit the 30-40% mark! Part of it is that since we eat most of our meals from home - I do need to change things up to prevent boredom & therefore sparking eating out more.
:-)
